Mission
Every year in Sweden, nearly 20,000 students leave compulsory school without eligibility for upper secondary education. For many young people, this marks the beginning of long-term exclusion from further education and the labour market.
Stiftelsen Läxhjälpen exists to change this trajectory. Our vision is that every young person receives the support they need to complete school and shape their own future. Through structured, long-term academic support delivered in schools with the greatest needs, we help students improve academic performance, strengthen self-confidence, and regain belief in their future.
Project
The project provides targeted tutoring and mentoring support to students in year 7-9 (ages 13-15) at risk of failing compulsory school. The programme combines intensive academic support, positive role models, and long-term relationship-building in order to improve educational outcomes and reduce the risk of future social exclusion. Students participate in tutoring sessions twice a week throughout the academic year, receiving approximately 200-250 hours of study support outside of the formal educational system annually. The programme is delivered by trained university students (mentors/tutors) employed by Läxhjälpen.
Their objective is to increase students’ eligibility for upper secondary education, strengthen motivation and self-confidence, and contribute to more equal educational opportunities.
Impact
Stiftelsen Läxhjälpen has a significant impact on students' educational outcomes in Sweden. In the 2024/2025 school year, 71% of ninth-grade students participating in the programme achieved the qualifications required for upper secondary education. Their average merit score increased by 23 points, compared with 15 points among other students at the same schools. In addition, 72% of participating students reported increased self-confidence and 76% said they became more motivated to continue their studies.
